This handmade Box Elder burl bowl began its journey as a massive, twisted burl on a Box Elder tree in Missoula, Montana, back in the 1990s.
The tree was required to be taken out by the city and was headed to the landfill. My dad and I salvaged as much as we could, including this massive burl.
This piece is the very first bowl to come from that burl — 1 of only 3 that will ever be made.
The red swirling you see is believed to be a naturally occurring reaction to a fungus.
